Better When He's Bad by Jay Crownover, Blog Tour: Interview w/ Bax & A Giveaway

Welcome to the next stop in the BETTER WHEN HE'S BAD blog tour hosted by Inkslinger. Today I'm excited to not only share my review of Jay's upcoming release, but I've also got BAX on the blog! I'll just warn you, BAX isn't a stereotypical "bad boy". He literally is, but there's more to him than inked up skin, a bad a attitude, and sharp tongue. You get what you get with him. You've been warned *snickers*

New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Jay Crownover returns with a heart-stopping new series… Welcome to the Point.

There’s a difference between a bad boy and a boy who’s bad . . . meet Shane Baxter.
Sexy, dark, and dangerous, Bax isn’t just from the wrong side of the tracks, he is the wrong side of the tracks. A criminal, a thug, and a brawler, he’s the master of bad choices, until one such choice landed him in prison for five years. Now Bax is out and looking for answers, and he doesn’t care what he has to do or who he has to hurt to get them. But there’s a new player in the game, and she’s much too innocent, much too soft…and standing directly in his way.

Dovie Pryce knows all about living a hard life and the tough choices that come with it. She’s always tried to be good, tried to help others, and tried not to let the darkness pull her down. But the streets are fighting back, things have gone from bad to worse, and the only person who can help her is the scariest, sexiest, most complicated ex-con The Point has ever produced.

Bax terrifies her, awakening feelings she never thought she’d have for a guy like him. But it doesn’t take Dovie long to realize . . . some boys are just better when they’re bad.

Hey Bax. What's one of the most important lessons you feel you've learned from growing up on the wrong side of the tracks, so to speak?

Only the strong survive. Weakness can come in many different forms and in a place like the Point having any kind of soft spot is a death sentence. If you’re going to care about something or more importantly someone, you better be ready to fight to the death in order to keep it or them in your life…a man with something to lose is the most dangerous thing in the Point.

Often times the "bad boy/guy" in a book normally isn't a bad guy per say, but I have to say I admire the fact that you embrace that image well, and don't make excuses for your past mistakes. Do you see yourself differently than the typical stereotypical "bad boy"?  If so, how so?

I don’t even know what that mean ‘bad-boy’. It sounds stupid and silly. Like something a little girl fantasizes about when she wants to give her parents a hard time. I had choices to make, most of them sucked and yeah I could have tried a little harder to make better ones, but it is what it is. I those choices led to be me being bad, to me doing bad shit then that was just par for the course of living in the Point. I never had to TRY and be anything…I just was and still is who I am. Sometimes it’s bad…most of the time it’s worse…but occasionally if the mood is right and my girl needs me to be I can chill it out for a second…my default is pretty much kill or be killed and its served me well enough up to this point. Obviously-since I’m still breathing.

Whether you meant to do this or not, you made it incredibly easy for me to root for you. I'd admit if I saw you on the street you'd most likely scare the crap out of me. I like under all the tough, inked up skin is someone who's dwelt with a lot in like, doesn't take crap for anyone and is extremely sure of themselves. I mean that in non-condescending way. Then Dovie enters your life, and I saw you in a different light. In what way has Dovie changed you? Or do you see yourself as the same person you were before she came around? I think she's altered you, even it’s ever so slightly.

Like I said earlier a man with something to lose is the most dangerous thing on these streets. I was a loose cannon before, off the leash and all that aggression and anger never served a purpose. I was absolutely okay with the fact I knew I was living on borrowed time. Now-f that. I’m not going to leave her alone to try and fight the fight alone. Anything and everything I have inside me has one specific purpose now-keep her alive and make her as happy in this shit life as I can. She makes me want to stick around, I don’t want to go back to jail, and I don’t want to force her to identify my body in the morgue. She makes me evaluate the risks I’m going to take before I take them and that is a leash I do not mind being on the end of.

What's one of your favorite things about Dovie?

You know I want to say her tits, right? But considering that’s probably not what you’re after I’ll say her loyalty and her fight…but seriously all that white skin and freckles…she’s pretty much perfect

Has there ever been a time that you wished life had dwelt you a different hand? If so, what would you see yourself doing?

No. That’s useless and what I don’t have time for is regret of second guessing any of the shit that’s happen. There is way too much stuff going on to let the past and those mistakes drag me down.

How would you describe your own story in 5 words or less?

Fast, dangerous, powerful, sexy, classic….which are incidentally 5 words I would use to describe my car.

Where do you see you and Dovie in the near future?

Naked in bed…or in the shower…or in my car…pretty much any place I can convince her to let me get my hands on her….beyond that I don’t care.
